TELUK INTAN: There is a good chance for Barisan Nasional to win the Hulu Selangor by-election as many voters in Selangor have realised their mistake of supporting Pakatan Rakyat, said Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the Opposition’s administration in Selangor had failed to bring development to the state and people were disappointed that they were not getting what had been promised to them in the Pakatan manifesto.
“The Selangor Government has failed to provide for senior citizens, abolish assessment rates and provide free parking as promised,” he said after the presentation of prizes to winners of a state-level Quran memorising competition here yesterday.
Perak Regent Raja Dr Nazrin Shah gave away the prizes at the ceremony held at the Arena Square.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also Defence Minister, said the Opposition’s claim that Barisan had not fulfilled its election promises was a futile attempt at elevating their image.
“I ask that the opposition parties to ask themselves what have they done for the people of Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, and Selangor,” he said.
He said PKR’s victory over Barisan in the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the 2008 general election was a narrow one and was due to BN’s internal problems.
He also hoped that the polemics between MIC and UMNO over the choice of the Barisan candidate for the by-election would cease, and that all the component parties should respect the agreement reached at the Barisan convention on the issue of election candidates. — Bernama
