GEORGE TOWN: A 17.84km stretch of highway from Weld Quay to Batu Maung has been renamed the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway with immediate effect.
The stretch encompasses both the Jelutong Expressway (JE) [NOT Japanese Encephalitis] and Bayan Lepas Coastal Highway.
Penang Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng said the state exco decided at its meeting recently to rename the highway.
“This route will cut across three of his giant projects – KOMTAR [Not to be confused with another one in JB], the Penang Bridge, and the Free Trade Zone,” he said.
He made the announcement at a recent press conference at Dewan Sri Pinang after Dr Lim’s casket arrived from his home in Tanjung Bungah about an hour earlier.
Lim said the 17.84km expressway stretched from the Prangin Road Ghaut junction to the Batu Maung Road/Jalan Permatang Damar Laut junction.
It involved four sections – the JE from Prangin Road Ghaut to Jalan Tengku Kudin (4.14km), an unnamed stretch under the responsibility of the Malaysian Highway Authority from the elevated interchange of the Penang Bridge to Jalan Tengku Kudin (2.53km), Lebuh Raya Sungai Nibung between the Penang Bridge elevated interchange and Jalan Tun Dr Awang (3.19km), and the Bayan Lepas Coastal Highway between Jalan Tun Dr Awang and the junction of Jalan Batu Maung/ Jalan Permatang Damar Laut (7.98km).
Lim said the expressway was linked, via Prangin Road Ghaut, to Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong, which was named after Dr Lim’s father.
Dr Lim’s eldest son, Chien Aun, said the family had no objection.
“We didn’t ask for it and it is not for the family but for the Penangites [people of Penang],” he said.
